gardening club

The parents are at it again! Giving up our Saturday seemed nothing as we met to look at the school playground improvements this weekend. Tom kindly helped build a new planter for us which we filled and planted seeds in – hope the carrots, beetroot and leeks come through soon!
Others helped move the 3 circular planters from the nursery area to the KS2 playground.

We still need to construct the third planter in the Owl garden and make some that will go into the KS2 playground abutting the fence on Longford Road. Do you think you could help? Please contact Miss Corns at school, or Liz Clay, Celia Hooson or Jane Cronin if you see them in the playground!

Super duper science happening at Oswald Road as children rediscover the secrets of the Ancient Egyptians

This morning Miss Elliott took a group of science enthusists out to conduct an experiment on mummification in the school playground. Combining the science, creativity, IT and art, she worked with them on researching the history of mummification. They then decided that the apples had to have it! They made a natron solution and dipped four apples into it……watch this space for updates on how the apples mummify, and a BIG THANK YOU to Miss Elliott for giving up her time to do this!

School and parent gardening club go crazy in the heat!

In temperatures mostly unheard of during the months of May, a happy band of parents and children came together to work hard on transforming the school playgrounds with the creation of some new vegetable planters and some back breaking work!

In little over 3 hours we had disassembled 3 large cupboards donated from Chorlton library (an excellent piece of recycling), somehow fitted them in Angie and Mike’s car and put them in the Owl garden. No mean feat I can assure you! They were HEAVY!! It could so easily have become a scene from the Chuckle brothers. Then there was some valiant soil shifting as these and the previously constructed planter were filled with soil in a 2 hour stint of shovelling. Thank goodness for wheelbarrows is all I can say. Once filled with soil, the planters were planted up with some lovely veggies – tomatoes, cabbages, lettuces…….THANK YOU to the children who helped us do this – some really hard work was done and you were brilliant.

One hot Sunday afternoon in May…….. on PhotoPeach

And finally, the planters in the Key Stage 1 playground had some lovely flowering plants put into them donated kindly by Gemma and Sophie’s grandparents and Miss Corns.

By 3.30, we were all flagging a bit as the sun and heat and hard work took its toll. But we all agreed it was a very productive and worth while afternoon, roll on the next one! Thank you all the parents and carers who helped today – hope you found a cooling shower and long cold drink helped unknot any aching muscles later on!

If you would like to get involved with Gardening Club, please watch this space for dates or contact Miss Corns, Angie Clark, Liz Clay or Jane Cronin. The more people who get involved the merrier! Our next project : more plants in the Key Stage 2 playground; mosaic work in Key Stage 1 playground; creating more fun with tunnels in the Butterfly garden…….any ideas for more projects? Please post them below.
